Dear Parents, Teachers, and Friends of St. Stephen Protomartyr School,
What a week it has been. As you know, our school community suffered a profound loss with the passing of Thomas Lorenz, a beloved 7th-grade student. Through resilience, outside support, and heavy hearts, we made it through the week together.
Inside this edition of Notes, you’ll find this week’s STAR nominations. Among them is a unique and powerful recognition: the Village. It’s often said that “it takes a village to raise a child,” and never has that truth been more evident. Over the past weeks, our community has faced one of its most difficult moments—not supporting just one child, but holding up nearly 200 SSP children through grief, confusion, and healing. Teachers, staff, parents, counselors, grief specialists, and even two therapy animals came together to provide comfort, strength, and love. This collective effort is a testament to the heart of SSP.
Our final STAR this week is Rev. Aaron Nord, who shepherded us through this storm with unwavering grace. His presence brought steadiness, compassion, empathy, and deep love to a community in mourning. We are deeply grateful for his leadership and care.
Under separate cover, we will send home Grief Resources for Parents to help you navigate conversations and emotions at home. These resources offer practical tips on how children process grief, identify common behaviors to watch for, and guide supporting them. They emphasize that children grieve differently than adults—often in short bursts—and need reassurance, honesty, and opportunities to express their feelings.
Please keep the Lorenz family in your prayers and continue to support one another as we walk through this time together. Additionally, please keep our students, school, and parish staff in your prayers. If you have concerns about your child or need additional resources, please don’t hesitate to contact our counseling team.
Thank you for being a community rooted in faith, compassion, and care.
In Christ,
D. Gregorio Medellin-Sturgill
Principal, St. Stephen Protomartyr School
