Happy Friday and Happy Halloween!
Or, more traditionally, Happy All Hallows’ Eve—the vigil of All Saints’ Day (Saturday), followed by All Souls’ Day (Sunday). Welcome to the weekend!
Here’s the answer to a frequently asked question:
Is All Saints’ Day (November 1) a Holy Day of Obligation this year?
Typically, yes—it’s a solemnity of the Catholic Church and a Holy Day of Obligation in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. However, for 2025, the obligation is abrogated (lifted) because November 1 falls on a Saturday. In the United States, when the solemnities of Mary, Mother of God (Jan 1), the Assumption (Aug 15), or All Saints (Nov 1) fall on a Saturday or Monday, the obligation to attend Mass is suspended.
Now you know!
A heartfelt thank you to all the parents, teachers, and school aides who attended the First Steps of Independence presentation by Amy Maus of West County Psychological. Amy’s message reminded me of the fable The Kind Woman and the Butterfly, in which a well-meaning woman helps a butterfly emerge from its cocoon. In doing so, she unintentionally weakens it, depriving it of the struggle that builds strength.
This story plays out daily in the lives of caring adults—parents, teachers, coaches—who, out of love, try to shield children from pain, failure, and discomfort. We hover, cushion, and protect, hoping to spare them the harsh edges of life. Yet, in doing so, we may unintentionally rob them of the very experiences that foster resilience, independence, and growth.
We hope the presentation was meaningful and thought-provoking for you.
Finally, a special thank you to Deacon Dana Engelhardt for training our new altar servers. These students will begin “interning” during weekday school Masses, paired with veteran servers as they acclimate to their new roles.
Wishing you a joyful weekend and God’s peace.
